Bunk Beds

Don't do a bunk or lie down on the job when it comes to choosing a bed - it's a different storey with a bunk bed

Maximise Your Space With Bunk Beds by BEVERLY SHEAFFER

Are you always trying to find more space in your home? Do you have multiple children who need to share a bedroom? Does your child love to run trains and track all over his bedroom floor? Does your teen regularly have friends over to hang out in her room? Then you should consider a bunk bed.

Bunk beds have been around for ages. There are basically two types - bunk beds and loft beds. A bunk bed consists of two beds stacked one on top of the other and the beds can be twin or full in size. On the other hand, a loft bed usually has a bed on the top bunk with a work or study area below. It may have a desk or storage drawers built into the design. The top bed of a loft may be twin or full in size. Both types of beds use a ladder to access the top bunk. Often, styles can be separated into single twin or full size beds if desired.

Bunk beds and loft beds come in wood or metal. Wood is durable and adds natural beauty to any room although wood bunk beds are usually more expensive than their metal counterparts. Metal bunk and loft beds come in a variety of styles. They are very affordable and easy to move around. As long as you purchase from reliable manufacturers, bunk beds and loft beds should be safe and durable.

It is important to consider safety when buying a bunk bed. Every year many people are injured due to bunk bed accidents. Often, these accidents occur because the beds are not well made or the beds were not being used properly. The first and most important thing to remember about bunk bed safety is, purchase good quality bunk beds from reliable manufacturers. Don’t buy the cheapest bunk bed out there. Your children’s safety could depend on this factor and it should be your biggest motivator.

Make sure the bed meets the American Society of Testing Materials (ASTM) Safety Standards for bunk beds as well as the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) standards. When you receive the bed, read all the manufacturer’s safety recommendations and enforce those with your children. Sure, bunk beds are fun and made to be enjoyed by children but teach the kids how to enjoy them and still be safe. Bunk beds were not meant to be playground equipment. If used properly and made well, they will be safe.

So, if you are looking for a way to save space, beautify your home, tidy up your bedroom or just add a neat piece of furniture to your room, consider a bunk bed. With all the available options, there is a bunk bed for everyone.
